FuturEcology & EmGuard ™ December update

Nelson is looking incredibly green for this time of year with plant growth, particularly weeds making the most of all the rain we have been having. However, its also good for all those plants that went in during the winter months and gives them a great head start

We are in full swing of working to have everything tidied up and looking good for the Christmas/New Year period with the team working across the region weedeating, spot spraying and hand releasing on many of our sites. The key to good plant establishment is to keep on top of the weeds in the early stages of plant establishment.

FuturEcology & EmGuard ™ wish you all a very happy Christmas and holiday season and hope you get some time to relax, catch up with family and friends and enjoy good food, good company and good summer pastimes.

Christmas/New Year Closure.

We will be closed from 12 noon on December 22nd and reopen at 8 am on 5th January 2022.

For delivery of any EmGuards prior to Christmas, orders need to be in no later than Monday 13th December. Pickups will still be available from our Hira workshop until the 22nd December.

We have good supplies of EmGuards and stakes on hand and they make a great sustainable Christmas present if you are stuck for good ideas.

Weeds to watch out for over summer

We have recently been made aware of a weed that has appeared in Nelson.

Blue Passionflower - Passiflora caerulea

This is a vigorous evergreen climbing vine with a rather amazing looking white flower with purple filaments that forms into a small inedible oval yellow/orange fruit.

It is spread by birds distributing the seeds or layering of stems and forms a heavy mass of foliage that smothers other plants. It tolerates drought, damage, a range of temperatures and some shade hence the opportunity for it to become another difficult weed species.

Vine type weed species are a real challenge as they often have the ability to climb into the canopy and then smother all plants underneath them as they cut off the light supply.

Vine weeds will prove to be an ongoing challenge for everyone trying to establish or restore native forest areas so make sure you are very vigilant with spotting them am dealing with them as soon as you can.
